Camperised VW vans in Tenerife
Most hire companies in Tenerife work with fleets of modern, factory-built vans: Peugeot Partner, Citroën Jumpy and similar. They do the job, but they're all identical to one another and to every other company's fleet. At Slow Campers we do the opposite: we hire out classic Volkswagens that we convert ourselves, by hand, in our workshop in El Sauzal.
Which models we have
Our fleet is made up of Volkswagen California, Caravelle and T4 vans from different generations, plus a Mercedes Vito. Vans with years behind them, with history, which we've thoroughly checked inside and out before converting them: engine, mechanics and cabin all tuned up so you can drive without any nasty surprises. Alongside them there is a large-volume Fiat Ducato with a brand-new camper conversion.
- Volkswagen California (pop-up roof, four seats, from €55 a night): Cali blanca, Cali Verde and Cali gris.
- Volkswagen Caravelle (two seats): Azul and La Carlos.
- Volkswagen T4: Hawaiana (four seats for the road, two to sleep) and, for two people, Rojita, Granate, Flowerpower and BBG.
- Mercedes Vito (2004, with air conditioning): Vito.
- Fiat Ducato (2018, large-volume, with indoor shower and portable toilet): Fiat Ducato, from €75 a night.
What's inside
- A fridge in every camper and, depending on the model, a kitchen, sink or shower.
- Heating in the three California and in Azul, for the colder nights at altitude.
- Pop-up roof on the three California, for extra berths and standing room.
- In most campers the bed is made up and the crockery is ready: you arrive and just bring your suitcase.
- A solar panel on Azul and power steering on several units.
Why a classic VW instead of a standard fleet van
A hand-converted Volkswagen doesn't drive or feel like a standard hire van. It has character, it has history, and each one is different from the next because we've built them ourselves, not pulled them from a factory catalogue. It's the difference between hiring a vehicle and hiring a camper you actually want to get lost around the island in.
